1. Lagos State Government on February 19, 2020 confirmed a case of Lassa fever outbreak in the state.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the patient has been isolated in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idia-Araba.

He also added that 63 persons have been placed under close monitoring over concerns that they may have come in contact with a Lassa fever patient.

The 63 persons placed under close monitoring were those he reportedly said may have been in contact with him since his arrival from Ebonyi State into Lagos, Lagos Law School, the Nigeria Air Force Clinic and LUTH.

2. World Health Organisation, WHO on February 20, 2020 released a disease outbreak news on Lassa Fever in Nigeria

According to WHO, 472 laboratory confirmed cases including 70 deaths representing a case fatality ratio of 14.8% was reported from 1 January through 9 February 2020 in 26 out of 36 Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory FCT.

In its breakdown, WHO reported that of the 472 confirmed cases, 75% have been reported from three states: Edo (167 cases), Ondo (156 cases) and Ebonyi (30 cases). The other states that have reported cases include : Taraba (25), Bauchi (14), Plateau (13), Kogi (13), Delta (12), Nasarawa (4), Kano (4), Rivers (4), Enugu (4), Borno (3), Kaduna (3), Katsina (3), Benue (2), Adamawa (2), Sokoto (2), Osun (2), Abia (2), Kebbi (2), Gombe (1), Oyo (1), Anambra (1), FCT (1), and Ogun (1).

Fifteen confirmed cases have been reported among health care workers with one death among a confirmed case and one among a probable case.

3. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC on Wednesday February 19, 2020 partnered with the Nigerian Postal Service, NPS to work out modalities on how to verify the addresses of SIM card owners in the country.

The two agencies also agreed to work out a Memorandum of Understanding on ways to facilitate financial inclusion in the country.

4. President Muhammadu Buhari on February 19, 2020 named Prof. Kemebradikumo Daniel Pondei as the new Acting Managing Director of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Prof. Pondei by this appointment replaces Joy Nunieh the former Ag. MD.

President Buhari also approved the enlargement of the Interim Management Committee from three to five members.

5. Nigerian film ‘Eyimofe (This is My Desire)’ has landed a sales representation deal in advance of its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film which is a co Nigeria-America production is the feature film debut of twin filmmakers, Arie and Chuko Esiri, who are from Warri in Delta State, Nigeria.

‘Eyimofe’ is a true reflection of migrants’ endless pursuit for greener pastures in Europe and the reality they often meet at the end. It tells the story of two people’s quest for what they believe will be a better life in Europe.
